New Delhi, 29 May 2025: Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) gets approval from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to build four units of 700 MWe each of indigenously developed nuclear reactors at Mahi Banswara in Rajasthan.
According to the official order made, the Regulatory Board stated that the approval has been granted after a three-tier review, subject to satisfactory compliance with the stipulations and conditions specified by the board. “This consent is valid for five years from the date of issuance of the consent, i.e., till May 07, 2030,” said the AERB.
NPCIL seeks consent from AERB and has applied to setting up four 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) at the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP).

The Regulatory Board stated that consent will be subject to re-review for any non-compliance with the stipulations and conditions. The consent shall not be transferable without the prior approval of the competent authority.
The nuclear power project is being developed by Anushakti Vidyut Nigam, a joint venture between the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).
In June 2017, the government granted administrative approval and financial sanction for the establishment of 10 indigenous 700 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in fleet mode.
These 10 reactors will add a total capacity of 7,000 MW, which is expected to be progressively implemented by the year 2031. In addition to the four units at Mahi, Banswara, the government plans to set up nuclear reactors at Chutka in Madhya Pradesh (two units), Kaiga in Karnataka (two units), and Gorakhpur in Rajasthan (two units).
