Tata Steel’s Jharia Division shines with multiple awards

Jharia/Dhanbad/Ranchi/Jamshedpur, March 12, 2025: The Annual Mines Safety Fortnight 2024, organised under the aegis of Directorate General of Mines Safety (Central Zone), concluded today with a grand closing ceremony at the Digwadih Football Ground in Jharia, Jharkhand. Ujjwal Tah, Director General, Directorate General of Mines Safety, graced the event as the chief guest.

From January 13 to January 25, 2025, a comprehensive mines inspection was conducted across all participating mines, focussing on various safety aspects, including trade tests. Notable participants included Tata Steel, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), and West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL).

The programme commenced with the hoisting of the safety flag and inspection of stalls, followed by ceremonial the lighting of a lamp. Attendees took the Safety Pledge, reinforcing the collective commitment to prioritising safety and engaging in proactive measures to protect themselves and others. The event featured various cultural performances and concluded with a prize distribution ceremony. A moment of silence was observed to honour the memories of all departed souls.

Tata Steel earned multiple accolades during the programme. The Sijua Colliery emerged as the Overall Winner in the ‘Group A’ category for underground mines producing over 50KT. The Group Vocational Training Centre at Jamadoba claimed the top prize in the ‘Group G category’ for vocational training centres, while the Central Workshop at Jamadoba secured first place in the ‘Group J’ category for regional workshops.

Additionally, Bhelatand Amalgamated Colliery stood first in Safety Performance and Mechanical Installation (both in surface and underground categories), and second in Maintenance of Mine Planning and Mine Surveying. The Sijua Colliery also performed admirably, finishing first in Mine Environment and securing second positions in several other categories, including Storage, Handling of Explosives & Blasting, Safety Performance, and Electrical Installation. This recognition reflects Tata Steel's ongoing commitment to enhancing safety standards and operational excellence in the mining sector.

In the Best Stall category, Tata Steel took first place, while Barora Area BCCL secured the second position.

D B Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Raw Materials; Tata Steel; Sanjay Rajoria, General Manager, Jharia Division; Subrata Das, Chief Jamadoba Group, Jharia Division; Vikash Kumar, Chief Sijua Group, Jharia Division; Narendra Kumar Gupta, Chief Quarry SE, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel; officials from Tata Steel, union members and senior executives and officers from the participating companies were present on the occasion. The programme was jointly hosted by Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India.
