New Delhi, February 6, 2026:
In a major breakthrough for peace and development in India’s Northeast, the Government of India, the Government of Nagaland, and the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) on Thursday signed a historic tripartite agreement, bringing resolution to decades-old demands and grievances of Eastern Nagaland.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in the long-running dialogue over governance, development, and administrative empowerment of Eastern Nagaland, covering districts such as Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Longleng, Noklak, Shamator and parts of surrounding areas.

A Long-Awaited Breakthrough

The pact is the outcome of sustained consultations and negotiations held over several years between the Centre, the state government, and ENPO representatives. The Eastern Nagaland region has historically flagged concerns related to infrastructure gaps, administrative challenges, and uneven development compared to other parts of the state.

With this agreement, all three stakeholders have arrived at a mutually acceptable framework aimed at strengthening local governance, improving service delivery, and accelerating socio-economic development, while maintaining Nagaland’s territorial integrity.

Focus on Peace, Development and Inclusive Growth

Senior officials said the agreement reflects the Centre’s broader approach of resolving complex regional issues through dialogue rather than confrontation. The framework is expected to create a dedicated institutional mechanism for Eastern Nagaland, enabling targeted planning, improved fund utilisation, and focused execution of development projects.

The move is also being seen as a key step toward enhancing trust between communities and governments, ensuring long-term stability in a strategically important region of the country.

The agreement aligns with the central government’s long-term vision of transforming the Northeast into a hub of connectivity, growth, and opportunity. Over the past decade, the region has seen increased investments in roads, railways, power, digital connectivity, and social infrastructure.

Officials noted that the Eastern Nagaland agreement reinforces the commitment to inclusive governance, ensuring that no region or community is left behind in India’s development journey.
