GAIL wants to buy entire 25 percent stake of Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation

New Delhi: Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) India wants to buy all shares consisting of 26 percent stake of Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation (GCGSCL) in its joint venture, Bengal Gas Company (BGCL), to make it its own 100 percent subsidiary. 

However, the West Bengal government-owned GCGSCL is unwilling to transfer any share.

This is a joint venture of 74:26 ratio, 74 percent of GAIL, and 26 percent of GCGSCL. Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited is presently getting coal gas, from Dankuni Coal Complex, a subsidiary concern of Coal India Limited, since May 25, 1990.

Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited, in spite of various constraints, is carrying the legacy of supplying coal gas by Oriental Gas Company Ltd. from the days dating back of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857 and thus can truly claim to the heritage institution and pride of West Bengal.
