Bhopal: Short Circuit Test (SCT) on Oil Filled Cable box for Transformers was successfully conducted for the first time in India at CPRI, Bhopal on October 9-10, 2020, as part of a pioneering initiative by Engineers India Ltd. (EIL). Till now, no National/International Specification/ Guidelines were available for SCT on Oil Filled/insulated Transformer Cable box. Test Facility for SCT on Oil-filled/insulated Transformer Cable Boxes was also not present anywhere in the country.
In the absence of SCT, Short Circuit Fault has often occurred in Oil Filled Cable Boxes resulting in fire and complete damage to transformers. To bridge this technology gap, the SCM-Inspection Deptt of EIL took the initiative of upgrading the test facility at Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bhopal for conducting SCT. At the same time, an initiative was undertaken to include SCT requirement in BIS standards for Transformer cable boxes.
Simultaneously, BHEL-Jhansi was lined up for arranging a prototype Cable Box. The SCT procedure was developed jointly by EIL & BHEL. The Procedure approved by EIL has been taken into cognizance by CPRI for ensuing Short Circuit Testing of Oil-filled cable boxes.
The successful SCT will give much impetus to EIL’s efforts towards vendor development and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by creating a roadmap for all other Transformer Suppliers and Oil & Gas fraternity to conduct such testing for ensuring the adequacy and foolproof design of Oil-filled Cable Boxes.
