BHEL shares prices surged amid gaining biggest order for NLC India

The PSU giant BHEL [Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited] has gained the largest order for NLC India to architect the building for a thermal power plant, worth Rs19,422 crore.

The shares of the respective company surged to 6% after the company won the Rs19,422 crore Talabira Power Project. The shares of the company were trading 5.11% higher at Rs203.45 per share as of Tuesday morning. The company has bagged the contract order to build three ultra-supercritical units of 800 MW each for NLC India at Talabira, while the coal for the plant will be sourced from the captive mines of Talabira.

The ultra-supercritical thermal power plant is of 3200 MW which comprises two stages: Stage I is of three units of 800 MW and Stage II is of one unit of 800 MW. The sector BHEL has been bidden for stage I.

As of September 2023, NLC India had 3.6 GW of thermal power capacity 1.4 GW of renewable energy and a mining capacity of around 50 million tonnes of lignite and coal. In addition to this, it had won two solar projects through a bidding process which consists of 600 MW in Gujarat and 800 MW in Rajasthan. The company is also planning to increase its electricity generation capacity to 17 GW by 2030.

This is certified to be the biggest and largest order for BHEL, which will establish its plant at Tiruchi [boilers], Haridwar [turbine-generator], and Hyderabad [various other components such as pulveriser mills].

The shares of BHEL climbed 5.78 percent to a high of Rs204.65 on BSE. While the shares of NLC India were raised up to 1.56 percent at Rs257.30. Meanwhile, the shares of L&T, the runner-up bidder, were flat at Rs3,525.05. The NLC India is supposed to produce 14.5 million tonnes of coal from Talabira this year, and significantly planning to raise production to 20 million tonnes in a few years.

NLC India is a central public sector undertaking under the aegis of coal ministry, Government of India. It annually produces about 30 million tonnes of lignite. At the September end quarter , NLC India has achieved the milestone of significant turnover of Rs2,744 crore on which it had made a net profit of Rs1,121 crore.
