Grand Inauguration of GEM 2025 at NTPC Unchahar

For the past six years, NTPC has been running a unique and highly impactful programme under its community development initiatives to nurture the personality of rural girls living in the vicinity of its projects. This programme, known as the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), began its 2025 session at NTPC Unchahar with a ceremonial inauguration led by Head of Project Shri Abhay Kumar Srivastava and President of Priyadarshini Ladies Club, Smt. Anupama Srivastava, through the lighting of the traditional lamp.

A total of 120 girls, aged 10 to 12 years, have been registered from 13 nearby schools to participate in this transformative programme. The workshop will focus on the holistic development of these girls, building their confidence, nurturing leadership qualities, and fostering a sense of social and civic responsibility.

The evening commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, accompanied by the NTPC theme song, a symbolic representation of the organization’s commitment to progress, equality, and empowerment.

The inauguration was graced by the presence of Shri Abhay Kumar Srivastava, Head of Project, NTPC Unchahar, along with Smt. Anupama Srivastava, President, Priyadarshini Ladies Club. Other dignitaries included Shri Asutosh Biswas, GM (O&M), Smt. Jhumita Biswas, Vice-President, Priyadarshini Ladies Club, Ms. Ruma De Sharma, Head of HR, and esteemed members of the Uttara Ladies Club — Smt. Sangeeta Sinha, Vice President, Smt. The event also saw the presence of representatives from AITUC and INTUC, Heads of Departments, AC and DC of CISF, and members of the GEM 2025 organising committee, adding to the gravity and support for the initiative.

One of the evening’s highlights was a short film on GEM 2024, followed by a dance performance by alumni from the previous batch. The alumni shared their personal experiences, offering inspiring narratives of self-discovery, transformation, and newfound confidence — motivating the newly inducted GEM 2025 participants.

In his keynote address, Shri Abhay Kumar Srivastava emphasized NTPC’s unwavering commitment to education, empowerment, and inclusive development, underlining GEM’s role in nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. He also highlighted that the GEM which is the flagship programme of NTPC has been awarded by the United Nations.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Anupama Srivastava, President of Priyadarshini Ladies Club, said, “When a daughter is born, we say that Goddess Lakshmi has arrived. These girls are like Lakshmi to me. Their empowerment will lead to stronger families and, ultimately, a stronger society. Through such remarkable initiatives, NTPC is strengthening the very foundation of our community.”

The ceremony concluded with a cake-cutting celebration, followed by the distribution of essential kits to all participants. Each kit comprised three sets of uniforms, two tracksuits, three T-shirts, two night-suits, shoes, and toiletries, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic residential experience.
