NTPC Limited, which is known as the nation's largest power producer and has an immense significance in the energy sector holds major presence today in giving a good power generation business. The conglomerate contibutes on an average 20-25% of India's total electricity generation. 

Today, the company holds a big name in the market, but when we look back, we see a lot of conscientious and indefatigable efforts of the company's leadership in building the NTPC so tall.

Do you know who was the first person who held the responsibility and started the legacy of building this mammoth organisation, NTPC's First CMD, Dr. D.V. Kapur (Dr. Dharam Vir Kapur). Kapur was the first one who hold the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC on March 19, 1976.

After the company's incorporation in 1975, Dr. D. V Kapur held the charge of the company as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the company in 1976. After taking over the charge, on December 8, 1976 government cleared NTPC's first pithead super thermal power project at Singrauli in Uttar Pradesh. 

After Kapur's tenure began, NTPC's pivotal time started towards the leading energy aspirations. The company started the dig in big projects and established significant power dedicated to taking the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) for a large strategic move. In his initial guidance, NTPC embarked on its ambitious mission to electrify the country.

Mr. Kapur was born and brought up in Peshawar, now in Pakistan. He studied in the National High School up to matriculation in 1944. Thereafter, he did intermediate science with physics and mathematics from Gordon College Rawalpindi, followed by graduation with honors in Electrical Engineering in 1951 from the College of Engineering & Technology, Jadavpur, Calcutta, according to the data mentioned in dvkfoundation.


History of NTPC Limited

NTPC's Journey began back in November 7, 1975, incorporated as National Thermal Power Corporation Private Limited, later on after a year the 'Private' from its name has been deleted on Septmeber 30, 1976. The company then converted into public limited on Septmeber 30, 1985, after 9 year.

To give the company a wider shape and expand into various segments, the company on October 28, 2005 officially changed the name to NTPC Limited. When the company was formed, it was a wholly owned enterprise of the Government of India. The changes started when NTPC launched its IPO in October 2004 and became a listed company on the BSE and NSE. After this listing, the government's holding was reduced to 89.5% of the equity share capital. Since then, the Government continued to reduce (divest) stakes in NTPC over the years, and now it stands at only 51.10% shareholding (Government's Stake).

In May 2010 the company bagged the title of Maharatna Company and ranked No. 2 Independent Power Producer(IPP) in Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company rankings. From 2010 company's operational performance increases and rapidly.
