Cabinet Approves 4-Lane NH-927 from Barabanki to Bahraich at Rs 6969 Crore
New Delhi, March 18, 2026 – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 4-lane access-controlled National Highway-927 (NH-927) connecting Barabanki to Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. The 101.515 km corridor will be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total cost of Rs 6969.04 crore.
Project Highlights
The Barabanki–Bahraich NH-927 upgrade is aimed at improving road safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing regional connectivity. Key features of the project include:
-
Length: 101.515 km
-
Design: 4-lane access-controlled highway with continuous service roads
-
Bypasses: 48.28 km to avoid major habitations
-
Major Roads Connected: NH-27, NH-330B, NH-730, SH-13, SH-30B
-
Capital Cost: Rs 6969.04 crore (Civil Cost: Rs 3485.49 Cr, Land Acquisition: Rs 1574.85 Cr)
-
Mode: Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM)
The upgraded highway will correct sharp curves, geometric deficiencies, and congestion in built-up areas across Barabanki and Bahraich districts, reducing travel time to about one hour and improving fuel efficiency and vehicle operating costs.
Strategic and Economic Importance
The project will provide seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across Uttar Pradesh:
-
Airports: Lucknow & Shravasti
-
Railway Stations: Barabanki, Rasauli, Jangirabad, Rafinagar, Bindaura, Burhwal, Chowkaghat, Ghaghraghat, Jarwal, Bahraich
-
Land Port: Rupaidiha
-
Economic Nodes: 01 SEZ & 02 Mega Food Parks
-
Social Nodes: 02 Aspirational Districts
-
Major Towns Connected: Barabanki, Ramnagar, Jarwal, Kaisarganj, Kundasar, Fakharpur, Bahraich
Upon completion, the corridor will strategically enhance cross-border trade with Nepal via the Nepalganj border and provide faster access to the Rupaidiha Land Port, boosting regional commerce, agri-trade, tourism, and investment.
The highway is expected to generate 36.54 lakh direct person-days and 43.04 lakh indirect person-days of employment, while facilitating Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of 28,557 Passenger Car Units (PCU) in Package-1 and 21,270 PCU in Package-2 by FY 2028.
PM GatiShakti and Multi-Modal Integration
The NH-927 upgrade is aligned with the PM GatiShakti plan, connecting 03 Economic Nodes, 02 Social Nodes, and 12 Logistics Nodes, and improving multi-modal integration across the region. This will support faster movement of goods and passengers, particularly connecting remote districts like Bahraich and Shravasti with national and international trade routes.
Conclusion
The 4-lane access-controlled NH-927 project represents a major infrastructure boost for Uttar Pradesh, enhancing regional mobility, road safety, and socio-economic development. By reducing travel time, improving fuel efficiency, and strengthening cross-border trade, the highway is set to transform connectivity in eastern Uttar Pradesh and support India’s national and regional growth objectives.
