REC Limited Sanctions ₹4.22 Crore to Build 100 Smart Classrooms in Rural Assam

GURUGRAM: State-run power sector lender REC Limited has partnered with the Indo German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) to modernize educational infrastructure in Assam. Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing, REC has committed a financial grant of ₹4.22 crore to deploy digital learning frameworks across 100 government institutions in the state.

The project, titled "Establishing 100 Smart Classrooms in 100 Government Schools in the Lakhimpur and Kaziranga regions of Assam," targets rural and ecologically sensitive areas to bring modern technological infrastructure to underserved student communities.

The Agreement Framework

The official rollout plan was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on July 2, 2026, at the REC Corporate Office located in Gurugram, Haryana.

The agreement was signed by:

• Shri L. B. Nautiyal, Head of Department (CSR), representing REC Limited.

• Shri B. Vinod Kumar, Director, executing on behalf of IGIAT.

The signing took place in the presence of Shri Arun Kumar Tyagi, Executive Director (CSR) of REC Limited, alongside senior administrative representatives from both organizations. IGIAT will act as the key implementing partner responsible for executing the technical installation, infrastructure setup, and teacher orientation programs across the selected locations.

Target Regions and Socio-Economic Impact

The intervention is strategically focused on two vital zones in Assam:

1. Lakhimpur Region: A northern district frequently impacted by monsoon displacements, where school infrastructure requires modernization to retain students.

2. Kaziranga Region: An ecologically vital zone where local communities face unique geographic barriers to accessing advanced technical education.

By placing exactly one smart classroom in each of the 100 designated government institutions, the project aims to transform traditional textbook environments into interactive, multimedia-driven learning spaces.

Core Goals of the Digital Drive

According to the project blueprint, this CSR initiative tackles structural educational disparities through three main pathways:

• Bridging the Rural Digital Divide: Bringing the same high-tech visual media tools, online curricula, and digital resources found in metropolitan private schools into rural state-run classrooms.

• Building Future-Ready Skills: Helping young students build digital literacy early, preparing them for higher academic environments and a technology-heavy job market.

• Enhancing Retention and Engagement: Using interactive displays and software modules to make daily lessons more engaging, directly helping to reduce drop-out rates in public school systems.

This collaboration highlights REC Limited’s ongoing focus on funding equitable education projects as a pillar of long-term sustainable development.
