Centre appoints monitors to push stuck highway projects

NEW DELHI: After receiving several complaints of inferior quality work in construction of national highways, the Centre has now decided to appoint senior engineers as national level project monitors for identification of bottlenecks in the ongoing highway projects and suggest measures for their timely completion.

The ministry of road, transport and highways is primary responsible for development and maintenance of the National Highways with work carried by executive agencies like state PWDs (Public Works Department), NHAI (National highways Authority of India), National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and Border Road Organisation (BRO).

“The agencies have their own system of planning, execution and quality assurance in place. However, Ministry has been receiving complaints of inferior quality works, delay in completion, inadequate provisions in the project and poor services by the concessionaire from various quarters,” said a senior ministry official.
