Trump's Tariff game continues.. 100% Tariff on semiconductor imports
After taking his second presidency in the United States of America (USA) in January 2025, President Donald Trump in February stated that increase the tariffs on most imports from Mexico and Canada and 10% on goods from China. On a wider range 10% is the universal baseline tariff on most imports, which took effect on April 5, 2025, and was later followed by country-specific "reciprocal tariffs".
This tariff game is now becoming a top headline, facing issues, especially for India. In the name of reshaping international trade relationships of the United States with different countries, India faced a total tariff rate of 50% which was 25% earlier. The additonal 25% imposed as a penalty because of India's continued purchase of crude oil from Russia. These impositions will be effective from August 27, due to India’s direct or indirect importation of the Russian Federation oil.

On 5th August, Trump joined the CNBC interview where he said, "We do very, very little business with India because their tariffs are so high — so India has not been a good trading partner because they do a lot of business with us, but we don’t do business with them. So, we settled on 25%, but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours because they’re buying Russian oil. They’re fueling the war machine.”
And yesterday, President Donald Trump said he will impose a 100% tariff on foreign-made semiconductors, exception are for those companies that are already invested in the US. This news is connecting the announcement that surfaces Apple's investment of $100 billion in the US.
Noting, one of the world's largest contract chipmakers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will be exempted from this because it has already invested in the United States with a massive fabrication plant. South Korean companies are also not included in this tariff rate because SK includes Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
