New Delhi: The United Arab Emirates is celebrating its 54th National Day today, marking the historic unification of the emirates in 1971 under the theme “Spirit of the Union.” The National Day, also known as Eid Al Etihad, commemorates the formation of the federation by Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, under the visionary leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Ras Al Khaimah joined the federation shortly after, in February 1972, completing the seven-emirate union.

Festivities are being held across the nation, with the main official ceremony taking place in Al Ain and live-streamed to viewing zones in every emirate. Concerts, heritage exhibitions and vibrant fireworks displays are lighting up key landmarks, while cultural programs at Al Shindagha Museum and Hatta Heritage Village are showcasing the country’s rich traditions along with its modern achievements.

With a four-day weekend declared, citizens and residents are celebrating with community events, patriotic decorations and gatherings. On the eve of the celebrations, Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa shone in the colours of the UAE flag, contributing to the festive atmosphere at major attractions across the city.
