The DCU and a coke handling storage (CHS) facility were put up as part of the Integrated Refinery Expansion Project at a cost of Rs 16,500 Crores.

New Delhi: With the 1511th rake that was flagged off from Kochi Refinery by Executive Director Mr. Abhai Raj Singh Bhandari, in the presence of Trivandrum Divisional Railway Manager, Mr. S M Sharma and Chief Freight Transportation Manager, Southern Railways, Mr. R Murugaraj on 23 August 2023, Bharat Petroleum crossed the milestone of 5 million metric tons of Petcoke dispatch. 

From Kochi Refinery, Mr. Sankar M, Chief General Manager (Operations), Ms. Vandana D, State Head (I&C) TN1 and Mr. Shukla SK, General Manager (Oil Movement & Storage) along with Mr Puneet Kalhan, Director (Services), Thyssenkrupp were also present in addition to senior officials from Indian Railways, and Ramco Cements.

Petcoke, which finds application in various manufacturing sectors including cement and fertilizers, is produced in the delayed coker unit (DCU) of Kochi Refinery.

The CHS at Kochi Refinery is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the country and comprises of a state-of-the-art Petcoke storage dome of 78,000 MT, three (3) pipe conveyors, seven (7) trough conveyors, two (2) rake loading silos and a Petcoke crusher with a rated capacity of 650 MT per hour.

The first coke was cut on 14 June 2017 and the first rake of Petcoke from KR Coker was flagged off on 6 July 2017.
