Government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has become the first telecom operator to launch a satellite-to-device service in India. BSNL is collaborating with the US-based satellite communications company Viasat to provide this service. The companies successfully demonstrated satellite-powered two-way messaging services for attendees at the India Mobile Congress 2024 in October.

Viasat had previously stated that it is working with partners, including BSNL in India, to expand satellite services for consumer and Internet of Things (IoT) devices globally. In the trial, Viasat demonstrated two-way messaging and emergency SOS messaging using a commercial Android smartphone enabled for non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity. Messages were sent nearly 36,000 km to one of Viasat's geostationary L-band satellites. The new technology follows new global mobile 3GPP release 17 standards, which are currently being adopted by satellite operators, telcos, handset, and chipset manufacturers.

During the demonstration at IMC, Viasat explained that direct-to-device connectivity is a new technology that allows everyday devices—such as mobile phones, smartwatches, or cars—as well as industrial machinery and transport operators to connect seamlessly to both terrestrial and satellite networks.
