Ecological restoration at Bharat Coking Coal
New Delhi: Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) is transforming its degraded mined out areas and overburden dumps in Jharkhand into natural forests
BCCL physically reclaims its mined out areas, removes weeds, creates fences, puts mulch over slopes and prepares seed balls to broadcast them. BCCL also undertakes sapling plantation to establish a three tier ecological restoration system.
The lower most ground is covered with grasses; shrub and bush species in the middle tier and trees as the upper tier. These methods are establishing a rich ecological system.
Bharat Coking Coal Limited is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited with its headquarter in Dhanbad, India. It was incorporated in January, 1972 to operate coking coal mines operating in the Jharia and Raniganj Coalfields and was taken over by the Government of India on 16 October 1971.
