India Strengthens Power Sector Cooperation with Neighbouring Countries

New Delhi: The Government of India, through the Ministry of Power and its Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), continues to strengthen cooperation in the power sector with neighbouring countries including Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.

This cooperation includes power generation projects, cross-border transmission links, electricity trade, and energy efficiency initiatives aimed at strengthening regional energy security and economic cooperation.


MoUs and Agreements with Neighbouring Countries

The Ministry of Power and its CPSEs have signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements with neighbouring countries and their power utilities. Key agreements include:

Government-to-Government Agreements

  • Government of India and Government of Nepal for electric interconnections
  • Government of India and Royal Government of Bhutan for cooperation in energy efficiency
  • Government of India and Government of Sri Lanka for power sector cooperation
  • Government of India and Government of Bangladesh for power cooperation
  • Government of India and Government of Myanmar for power sector collaboration

Agreements by Central Power PSUs

MoUs and agreements have also been signed by major Indian power CPSEs including:

  • NHPC Limited with Investment Board Nepal and Nepal power companies
  • NTPC Limited with Nepal Electricity Authority
  • NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited with Nepal Electricity Authority
  • Tripartite Agreement among Nepal Electricity Authority, NVVN and Bangladesh Power Development Board
  • Power Grid Corporation of India Limited with Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka authorities
  • SJVN Limited with Government of Nepal and Nepal Electricity Authority

Cross-Border Power Cooperation

India’s cross-border power cooperation focuses on:

  • Hydropower development in Nepal and Bhutan
  • Cross-border electricity trade with Bangladesh
  • Transmission interconnections with neighbouring countries
  • Regional energy security and grid connectivity
  • Renewable and hydro power development

These initiatives are strengthening regional power connectivity in South Asia and supporting clean energy development, especially hydropower in Nepal and Bhutan.
