CP Radhakrishnan elected as Next Vice President of India

New Delhi, 10 September 2025: Shri CP Radhakrishnan, a nominee of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been appointed as the next Vice-President of India. He defeated INDIA bloc candidate Justice B. Sudershah Reddy in the election on Tuesday. Shri Radhakrishnan has secured 452 first preference votes, and Justice Reddy got 300 votes. While 15 votes were declared invalid.
The results were announced by Rajya Sabha General Secretary PC Mody. The election witnessed a turnout of 98.20%, with 767 MPs casting their vote out of 781. Meanwhile, 13 MPs abstained; that includes seven from the Biju Janata Dal, four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, one from the Shiromani Akali Dal, and one independent MP.
The vice president's office has been vacant since July 21 due to Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation for health reasons. Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan was born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, and has been serving as the Governor of Maharashtra since July 2024 before being named as the NDA’s Vice President nominee.

Earlier, he served as Governor of Jharkhand and held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry. A two-time MP from Coimbatore, he began his political journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Jana Sangh before joining the BJP.
Later, he went on to serve as BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president and held several parliamentary positions, including Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee. Between 2016 and 2020, he chaired the Coir Board under the Ministry of MSME, during which coir exports reached a record high. From 2020 to 2022, he was the BJP’s in-charge for Kerala.
