Mumbai: Hon’ble Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy,  in his keynote address at the 6th edition of India Steel Expo in Mumbai, emphasized that steel is the backbone of India’s economic progress & a key pillar of Viksit Bharat 2047. Citing iconic infrastructure landmarks from the Chenab Bridge in Jammu & Kashmir to the Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu, he highlighted that these national achievements are powered by a robust and rapidly advancing steel sector.

He further underlined that the coal and mining sector serves as the strong foundation of the steel industry, providing essential raw materials required for its sustained expansion. Shri Reddy highlighted that India achieved an unprecedented milestone of 1 BT of coal production & dispatch in FY 2024-25, significantly strengthening national energy & industrial security. He reiterated that coal continues to meet over 70% of India’s power demand, making it indispensable not only for electricity but also for driving the steel and manufacturing sectors forward.

Focusing on coking coal, Shri Reddy elaborated on the Mission Coking Coal, launched to reduce India’s import dependency by boosting domestic production, increasing coal washing capacity & promoting private sector participation. He also mentioned Rs 8,500 crore National Coal Gasification Mission, aimed at transforming high-ash domestic coal into cleaner syngas for direct reduced iron (DRI) steelmaking.

Citing Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of steel as a “sunrise sector”,  he reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building integrated, technologically advanced, and environmentally sustainable coal–steel value chain. He called upon stakeholders across government and industry to work in unison to shape a future-ready ecosystem.
