NTPC Achieves Major Breakthrough at Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Project

Project Site, July 8, 2026: NTPC has achieved a major construction breakthrough at its 520 MW Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Power Project (TVHPP). On July 8, 2026, the project team successfully completed the breakthrough of the critical Head Race Tunnel (HRT), marking a monumental step forward for the hydropower asset.

The breakthrough was realized through the precise physical alignment and joining of excavation streams progressing from Face-02 and Face-03. Senior corporate officials from NTPC alongside engineers from the primary executing agency, M/s Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. (HCC), witnessed the breakthrough at the underground site.

Technical Highlights of the HRT Excavation

The structural connection bridges two massive excavation fronts, bringing the critical water conductor system closer to operational completion:

• Face-02 Excavation Yield: $1,748$ meters of precise underground boring.

• Face-03 Excavation Yield: $981$ meters of targeted heading excavation.

• Cumulative Progress: Total HRT excavation has now climbed to 9.7 km out of the total proposed alignment length of 12.1 km.

• Work Volume Completed: Approximately 80% of the entire Head Race Tunnel excavation layout is now officially structurally complete.

Overcoming Himalayan Geological Challenges

The successful breakthrough is highly significant given that it was accomplished under some of the most volatile and challenging Himalayan geological conditions in the world. The engineering team had to consistently maneuver through unpredictable, complex rock formations and highly challenging underground construction environments.

Despite these spatial restrictions and structural risks, the execution team managed to breach the final rocky barrier while strictly maintaining high safety thresholds and structural quality standards. The breakthrough will now immediately clear the path for the final phase of concrete tunnel lining works to commence.
