NTPC Kaniha Clarifies No Ash Spill Incident After Heavy Rainfall Causes Overflow at Ash Pond

New Delhi: NTPC Kaniha has issued an official clarification following media reports alleging a breach in the company's ash pond and resulting damage to surrounding areas.

According to the statement, the incident occurred at around 12:30 AM on July 3, 2026, when heavy rainfall caused the existing toe drain at the bottom of B Zone Stage-2 Ash Pond to become blocked with silt, ash, and earth, leading to an overflow of storm water into an adjacent area.

The company emphasized that the affected land belongs entirely to NTPC, and clarified that the incident did not involve any breach of the ash pond structure.

NTPC further stated that immediate corrective action was taken by its authorities, including the clearing of the blocked drain and restoration of the toe drain to ensure normal drainage operations.

Importantly, the company categorically denied reports claiming that ash-water had spilled into agricultural fields, school areas, or the Tikira River.

According to NTPC, there has been no spillage of ash-water outside the plant premises, contrary to certain reports circulating in electronic and print media.

The company added that the situation is being closely monitored, while necessary maintenance and preventive measures are being carried out on priority to avoid any recurrence.
