Oil India Begins First Ever Drilling in Tripura Under HELP Policy
Maharatna CPSE, Oil India Limited has announced that it has commenced its exploration and production activities in Tripura by making initial drilling of the well Debtamura 1 at Loc. TUL-B of DSF-II block AA/ONDSF/TULAMARA/2018 on 11th May, 2025.
Shri Rupjyoti Phukan, RCE, OIL, Maj General (Retd.) Praveen Mathur, Advisor - Security (DGH), Smt. Sutirtha Paul, Joint Director, Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Govt of Tripura, Shri Chitra Mohan Borah, Executive Director and HoD, Forntier Basin Project, OIL, Shri Arunav Baruah, Chief General Manager (FB), OIL, Shri Pankaj Kumar Biswas, General Manager, GAIL, and other senior officials from OIL attended the spudding ceremony at the location.
This event is a historic breakthrough in Tripura’s hydrocarbon scenario as Debtamura 1 is going to be the first well drilled by any oil and gas company in the state of Tripura, under the Govt of India’s Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP) regime.
The well Debtamura 1 is located approximately 120 KM from Agartala, inside Baramura- Debtamura Reserve Forest, Gomati district, near the Indo-Bangladesh International border.

Till date, hydrocarbon exploration & production activities in this block had been beset with myriad set of challenges which broadly includes undulated and thick vegetated terrain, challenging surface logistics due to limited and narrow hilly roads having hair-pin curves, predominant and extended monsoon season causing unprecedent flood and the ensuing landslides due to younger sediments dissected by lineaments which badly damaged the well plinths and the approach road.
