Women Break Barriers at MCL, Join Ranks of Skilled Miners
The initiative is part of a larger push by MCL's parent company, Coal India Limited (CIL), to promote gender equity and institutional excellence.

Sambalpur, Odisha — In a landmark move toward gender equality in the coal mining industry, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has successfully inducted a group of its female employees into key operational roles, traditionally dominated by men. The move, celebrated with a banner reading "Narishakti in MCL," highlights a new chapter of empowerment for women in a core industrial sector.
The initiative is part of a larger push by MCL's parent company, Coal India Limited (CIL), to promote gender equity and institutional excellence. These women were provided with rigorous training to acquire a Mining Sirdar Certificate of Competency. This certification qualifies them for statutory positions in mine operations.
Furthering their commitment to a skilled and diverse workforce, MCL has also provided training in Rescue and Recovery work to nine of its female employees. This specialized training equips them to handle emergency situations, ensuring their readiness for high-stakes environments.

This significant step is part of CIL's flagship "Jyoti" program, which is designed to prepare female executives for higher responsibilities by strengthening their skills in communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence. The program aims to create a robust pipeline of women leaders in the coal sector, marking a fundamental shift in the industry's approach to human resources. By integrating women into core mining operations and rescue teams, MCL is not only breaking barriers but also setting a new standard for inclusivity and safety in one of India's most critical industries.
