ONGC CSR Support Brings Robotic Knee Surgery System to BHU Trauma Centre
Varanasi: In a significant boost to public healthcare and advanced orthopaedic treatment, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has supported the installation of a state-of-the-art robotic-assisted knee surgical system at the Trauma Centre of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.
The initiative has been implemented under ONGC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and is aimed at improving access to cutting-edge orthopaedic care within the public healthcare system.
First Robotic Knee Surgery Successfully Performed
The new system marked its launch with the first successful robotic knee replacement surgery performed on a 74-year-old patient from Bihar. Doctors at the Trauma Centre highlighted that the robotic technology allows surgeons to carry out procedures with far greater precision compared to conventional techniques.
The robotic platform enables personalized implant positioning and improves surgical accuracy, which helps reduce post-operative pain, shorten hospital stays and accelerate patient recovery.
First Government Hospital with Non-CT Robotic Technology
With the introduction of this system, the Trauma Centre at Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University has become the first government medical institution in India to adopt non-CT-based robotic knee surgery technology.
Previously, patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and neighbouring regions often had to travel to major metropolitan cities and private hospitals to access such advanced procedures. The new facility will make high-quality robotic orthopaedic care available within the public healthcare ecosystem.
Support for Economically Weaker Patients
As part of the CSR initiative, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has also provided robotic surgical consumables to support 100 economically vulnerable patients. This will enable them to undergo robotic knee replacement surgeries at significantly subsidised costs, including coverage under the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme.
Training Hub for Robotic Surgery
Beyond patient treatment, the new facility is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s expertise in robotic surgery. The centre will serve as a training hub for orthopaedic surgeons, helping medical professionals gain hands-on experience with robotic-assisted surgical technologies.
Experts believe this initiative will contribute to expanding the adoption of precision healthcare solutions across the country and improve treatment outcomes for patients suffering from severe joint problems and trauma-related conditions.
Strengthening Healthcare Through CSR
Officials noted that ONGC’s CSR programmes increasingly focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to advanced medical technology in public institutions. By enabling the deployment of robotic surgery in a government hospital, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and affordable healthcare.
The development reflects how collaborations between public institutions and corporate CSR initiatives can enhance medical services, improve patient outcomes and support the long-term modernization of India’s healthcare system.
