New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) of Brazil have taken a significant step to secure long-term energy supplies for India by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement, formalized at India Energy Week 2026 in Goa, aims to fortify the existing crude oil trading relationship between the two national energy companies.
Key Details of the Agreement:
-
Signatories: The MoU was signed by Shri Manoj Heda, Business Head (International Trading & Risk Management - ITRM) of BPCL, and Ms. Ticiana Jereissati de Araujo, Global Trading Executive Manager of Petrobras.
-
Venue & Witness: The signing ceremony was conducted in the presence of India's Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri.
-
Objective: The core purpose is to strengthen and potentially expand the existing crude oil supply framework, ensuring a more reliable, competitive, and long-term flow of energy resources to India.
Strategic Importance for India:
The collaboration aligns directly with India's strategic energy goals:
-
Source Diversification: It reduces import dependency on any single geographical region by deepening ties with a major South American producer.
-
Energy Security: A long-term agreement with a large, stable producer like Petrobras helps insulate India from volatile spot market prices and supply disruptions.
-
Commercial Competitiveness: Long-term contracts often provide more stable and favourable commercial terms compared to short-term market purchases.
About the Companies:
-
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL): A Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking and one of India's leading oil and gas companies, engaged in refining, marketing, and distribution of petroleum products.
-
Petrobras: Brazil's state-controlled multinational corporation and a global leader in deep-water and ultra-deep-water petroleum exploration and production.
Official Statement:
BPCL stated that the MoU "reinforces our commitment to diversifying crude sources and ensuring a reliable, competitive, and long-term energy supply for India."
