New Delhi: Numaligargh Refinery Limited (NRL) has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Guwahati (NIPER-G) to collaborate on cutting-edge research aimed at deriving pharmaceutical-grade products and key drug intermediates from refinery-based specialty chemicals.

The MoU was formally signed at NRL’s corporate office in Guwahati by Dr. USN Murty, Director, NIPER-G, and Mr. Bhaskar Jyoti Phukan, Managing Director, NRL. The event was also graced by senior professors from NIPER-G, including Prof. S. Tamilvanan, Prof. P. Radhakrishnanand, Prof. Jagat Ch. Borah, Prof. V.G.M Naidu, Prof. Sanjay Banerjee, Prof. Vikas Anand, and Mr. Dilip Haloi, along with Senior officials from NRL.

This collaboration is a significant step in leveraging refinery streams—particularly bio-based derivatives like furfural—for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) such as furazolidone, nitrofurantoin, and furosemide. The joint effort will focus on green chemistry, reaction optimization, and scalable technologies for sustainable healthcare innovations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Murty emphasized the importance of such interdisciplinary collaborations for creating an indigenous pipeline of high-value pharmaceutical compounds. Mr. Phukan highlighted the strategic alignment of this partnership with NRL’s vision of becoming a leader in sustainable refinery innovation and expanding into value-added chemical domains.

This MoU marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration aimed at fostering industry-academia synergy, promoting indigenous R&D, and contributing to India’s self-reliance mission in both the energy and pharmaceutical sectors.
