MSDE Partners with World Economic Forum to Launch 'India Skills Accelerator'
NEW DELHI, JANUARY 22, 2026 – In a major push to prepare India's young workforce for the jobs of tomorrow, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has joined hands with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to launch the 'India Skills Accelerator'. This new partnership aims to bridge critical skill gaps in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence, robotics, green energy and cybersecurity.
What is the India Skills Accelerator?
The Skills Accelerator is a multi-stakeholder platform that will bring together government, industry leaders and educational institutions to design and implement training programs that match global industry needs. The initiative focuses on:
-
Future-ready skills: Special training in AI, robotics, green energy, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing
-
Global employability: Helping Indian youth gain qualifications recognized worldwide
-
Industry alignment: Ensuring training programs match what employers actually need
-
Lifelong learning: Promoting continuous skill upgradation throughout careers
Why This Matters Now
With over 500 million Indians under the age of 25, India has one of the world's largest youth populations. This partnership aims to convert this "demographic dividend" into economic advantage by making Indian workers globally competitive.
The initiative builds on discussions held during India's participation at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos last year, where skill development was identified as crucial for India's growth story.
Leadership and Vision
Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, highlighted that this partnership transforms a strategic vision into structured action. "By bringing government, industry and education together, we're building a future-ready workforce aligned with global labour-market demands," he said.
Private sector leaders will co-chair the initiative alongside government representatives. Sanjiv Bajaj of Bajaj Finserv noted, "Skilling India's youth is central to converting our demographic advantage into economic leadership." Shobana Kamineni of Apollo Hospitals added that this positions India as "a trusted, future-ready talent contributor to the global economy."
How It Will Work
The Skills Accelerator will work closely with educational bodies like AICTE and UGC to:
-
Develop flexible, industry-relevant curriculum
-
Organize hackathons and innovation challenges
-
Create new financing models for skilling programs
-
Establish monitoring systems to track impact
Three key ministries – Skill Development, External Affairs, and Education – will coordinate to ensure the initiative connects India's skilling ecosystem with global opportunities.
The Bigger Picture
This partnership represents a significant step toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) by 2047. By focusing on future-oriented skills and global standards, the India Skills Accelerator aims to position the country as a leading hub for talent and innovation in the coming decades.
The initiative underscores India's commitment to preparing its workforce not just for today's jobs, but for the technological transformations shaping tomorrow's global economy.
