Sujay Karmakar Moves Up to Executive Director Role at NTPC

New Delhi, June 2026: NTPC Limited has appointed Sujay Karmakar as Executive Director (Senior Management) with effect from June 8, 2026. The appointment was disclosed to BSE and NSE under Regulation 30 of SEBI's Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations as part of a senior management elevation involving 34 officials.

According to the company's filing, Karmakar's tenure in the Executive Director grade is 1.92 years.

 

More Than 35 Years at NTPC

Sujay Karmakar joined NTPC in January 1991 and has spent more than three decades with India's largest power producer. During his career, he has worked across Operations, the Power Management Institute (PMI), Green Chemicals and NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), the company's research and development arm.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and an M.Tech degree from IIT Delhi.

 

Leading NTPC's Decarbonisation Initiatives

As Chief General Manager at NETRA, Karmakar has been associated with several initiatives related to energy transition and low-carbon technologies.

His areas of work include:

  • Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS);

  • Green Hydrogen;

  • Energy Storage technologies;

  • High-temperature steam electrolysis;

  • Hydrogen compression and storage systems;

  • Seawater electrolysis.

Key Projects Under His Leadership

Karmakar has played a role in several pioneering projects and technology demonstrations undertaken by NTPC, including:

  • Biomass co-firing trials at NTPC Dadri;

  • Municipal solid waste (MSW) and refuse-derived fuel (RDF)-based gasification projects;

  • Development of the NETRA Green Hydrogen Grid;

  • Advanced hydrogen production technologies;

  • Carbon utilisation projects.

One of the major milestones achieved during his tenure has been the execution and commissioning of India's first fully integrated CO₂-to-Methanol plant at NTPC Vindhyachal, marking an important step in carbon utilisation technologies.

 

Contributions to Research and Innovation

Apart from project execution, Karmakar has made significant contributions to research and academia.

His achievements include:

  • Co-guiding four PhD scholars;

  • Publishing 15 international research papers;

  • Filing seven patents;

  • Receiving NTPC's Best Employee Award in 2013.

Excellence in Operational Performance

Under his guidance, NTPC Vindhyachal earned the prestigious CII-Exim Bank Business Excellence "Platinum" Recognition 2024, the highest level of recognition for a first-time applicant.

 

Part of NTPC's Leadership Elevation

NTPC informed stock exchanges that 34 officials were elevated to the position of Executive Director (Senior Management) with effect from June 8, 2026.

The appointments form part of the company's senior leadership structure and were communicated through a filing signed by Company Secretary and Compliance Officer Ritu Arora.
