Who Is Shailesh Vagerwal? Meet the New CMD Appointed to Lead Bharat Dynamics Till 2031

Hyderabad, 19June 2026: State-owned defence company Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) on Friday said the Government of India has approved the appointment of Shailesh Vagerwal as its next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD).

In a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges, the company said the Ministry of Defence's Department of Defence Production, through an Office Memorandum dated June 18, 2026, conveyed the approval of the competent authority for Vagerwal's appointment.

However, the appointment will take effect only after he assumes charge of the post. BDL said the company received the intimation regarding the appointment on June 19, while Shailesh Vagerwal is yet to assume charge as Chairman and Managing Director.

Who Is Shailesh Vagerwal?

Shailesh Vagerwal has been approved by the Centre for appointment as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Dynamics Ltd, one of India's leading defence public sector undertakings.

According to the order, his tenure will commence from the date he assumes charge and will continue until his superannuation on March 31, 2031, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

As of now, Bharat Dynamics has not disclosed additional details regarding his professional background.

What Did BDL Say?

"Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production, Government of India vide its Office Memorandum dated June 18, 2026, has conveyed the approval of the competent authority for the appointment of Shri Shailesh Vagerwal as Chairman & Managing Director of BDL," the company said in its exchange filing.

The company further clarified that the appointment would become effective from the date of assumption of charge.
