New Delhi, February 5, 2026 – India welcomed 20.57 million international tourists in 2024, marking an 8.9% increase over the previous year and signaling a robust recovery in inbound tourism. This growth surpasses pre-pandemic levels and reflects the country’s rising appeal as a global travel destination.
According to the Bureau of Immigration, International Tourist Arrivals (ITAs) in India have steadily increased over the past five years:
| Year | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ITAs (in million) | 17.91 | 6.33 | 7.00 | 14.33 | 18.89 | 20.57 |
The growth in ITAs is supported by multiple factors, including streamlined visa processes, improved safety and hygiene standards, robust tourism infrastructure, and seamless connectivity. The popularity of the e-visa program has played a key role, with 14 sub-categories now available for nationals of 175 countries, allowing entry through 38 airports, 16 seaports, and 2 land ports.
The government has also strengthened tourism facilitation through digital platforms like the National Single Window System (NSWS) and National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI+), which streamline registration and approval for accommodation units, travel agents, tour operators, and other tourism service providers.
Promotional initiatives such as the Incredible India campaign, participation in international tourism fairs, and active social media engagement have further enhanced India’s global brand as a tourist destination.
The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has been working to improve connectivity to both established and emerging tourist destinations. Safety remains a priority, with efforts to set up dedicated Tourism Police units and a 24x7 Multi-Lingual Tourist Helpline (1800 11 1363 / 1363) providing assistance in 12 languages, including 10 international languages, to support both domestic and foreign travelers.
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, shared this information in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha today, highlighting India’s ongoing efforts to ensure a safe, sustainable, and seamless travel experience for international visitors.
