NTPC Group's Installed Capacity Exceeds 84 GW Mark with Start of 800 MW Patratu Unit

NEW DELHI/RANCHI, November 5, 2025: India’s largest power utility, NTPC Limited, has reached an important milestone by starting the commercial operation of the first 800 MW unit at its Patratu Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) in Jharkhand.

Unit 1 (800 MW) of the Patratu STPP, Phase-I (3x800 MW), began commercial operation at 00:00 hours on November 5, 2025. This addition has raised the NTPC Group's total installed and commercial capacity to a notable 84,849 MW.

The Patratu Super Thermal Power Project, located in the Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, is operated by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited. PVUNL is a joint venture where NTPC holds a 74% share and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) holds the remaining 26%.

Phase-I of the Patratu STPP includes three super-critical units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, making a total of 2,400 MW. Starting this first unit is a vital step in strengthening the region's power infrastructure, as 85% of the power produced will go to the State of Jharkhand.

The successful launch of this high-capacity, supercritical unit highlights NTPC’s ongoing commitment to addressing India's growing energy needs and improving its generation portfolio with efficient thermal power plants.
