India's Power Transmission Network Crosses 5 Lakh Circuit Km Milestone

India's national power grid achieves historic 5 lakh circuit km mark with 71.6% growth since 2014, boosting inter-regional transfer capacity to 1,20,340 MW for seamless electricity flow.
India's Power Transmission Network Crosses 5 Lakh Circuit Km Milestone

New Delhi: India's national power transmission network has crossed a significant milestone, exceeding 5 lakh circuit kilometres (cKm) in length. This landmark achievement underscores the rapid expansion and modernization of the country's electricity infrastructure, essential for supporting economic growth and renewable energy integration.

Accelerated Growth Since 2014

The transmission network has witnessed remarkable growth of 71.6% since April 2014, with an addition of 2.09 lakh circuit kilometres of new transmission lines. This unprecedented expansion has significantly strengthened the backbone of India's power sector, improving grid reliability and reach across the nation.

Enhanced Inter-Regional Connectivity

A key outcome of this infrastructure push is the substantial increase in inter-regional power transfer capacity, which now stands at 1,20,340 Megawatts (MW). This enhanced capacity enables the seamless and efficient transfer of electricity from power-surplus regions to power-deficit areas, ensuring better grid stability, optimized utilization of generation resources, and improved access to reliable power nationwide.

Strategic Importance for Energy Transition

This robust and expanded transmission network is critical for India's energy transition goals. It facilitates the integration of large-scale renewable energy projects, especially from solar and wind-rich states, into the national grid. The improved connectivity is vital for balancing variable renewable generation and ensuring a stable power supply as the country moves towards its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
