Kolkata, December 2025:
JSW Energy has announced plans to double the capacity of its Salboni thermal power project in West Bengal to 3,200 MW, with the total investment expected to increase to around ₹40,000 crore. The expansion will be carried out in phases, subject to regulatory approvals and fuel availability.

The company is currently implementing the first phase of the project, which involves setting up a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant. Environmental clearance for this phase has already been obtained. The initial phase alone entails an investment of about ₹16,000 crore, making it JSW Energy’s largest greenfield power project so far.

Speaking at the Business and Industry Conclave 2025, JSW Energy Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sharad Mahendra said the capacity expansion is part of the company’s long-term strategy to strengthen its thermal power portfolio while supporting the growing electricity demand in West Bengal.

The Salboni power plant has a 25-year power purchase agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL). The project will use domestic coal allocated under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy, ensuring fuel security for operations.
