Vice-President Lays Foundation Stone for ₹110 Crore Projects at Gauhati University

New Delhi:Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, today laid the foundation stone for infrastructure development projects worth ₹110 crore at Gauhati University.

The projects include a new multidisciplinary academic building, a new boys’ and international students’ hostel, and works related to the auditorium and library.

Key Highlights of the Visit

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President recalled that Gauhati University, established on 26 January 1948, was the first university in Northeast India. He noted that the institution currently holds NAAC A+ accreditation and ranks 9th among State Public Universities in NIRF 2025.

He appreciated the University’s efforts in preserving India’s linguistic heritage and welcomed the translation of Assamese and Tamil literary works into each other, describing it as a reflection of India’s cultural unity.

Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan also released two books on the occasion:

• Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Songs

• The 5th revised and enlarged edition of Chandrakanta Abhidhan

Highlighting the growth of higher education since 2014, he credited Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for the expansion of institutions and the significant rise in women’s enrolment in higher education.

He also appreciated Assam’s progress under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in the areas of education, infrastructure, investment and employment.

The Vice-President urged students to stay away from drugs, manage time wisely, remain disciplined and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The programme was attended by the Governor of Assam, Chief Minister of Assam, Education Minister and other senior officials and academicians.
