BHEL Contributes to Major Nuclear Milestone at Kalpakkam
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has celebrated a landmark achievement in India’s nuclear energy programme as the indigenously designed 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam achieved First Criticality.
This milestone marks a significant step forward in India’s civil nuclear journey and long-term energy security ambitions.
BHEL’s Key Contributions to the PFBR Project
BHEL played a vital role in the project across both the primary and secondary reactor systems.
Primary Reactor Side
BHEL contributed through:
- Manufacturing, supply, and fabrication of the Inner Vessel and Thermal Baffle
- Technology development for the Steam Generator-Evaporator, Inner Vessel, and Main Vessel
Secondary Side Contributions
On the secondary side, BHEL supplied and erected the 500 MWe Main Plant Turbine Generator Package, developed using indigenous technology.
Strengthening India’s Nuclear Energy Vision
The achievement reinforces BHEL’s role as a key partner in advancing India’s nuclear energy capabilities and supporting the country’s goals of energy security, self-reliance, and a future-ready power sector.
