BPCL Subsidiary Makes Major Oil Discovery in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi / Mumbai, January 14, 2026: Bharat PetroResources Limited (BPRL), the exploration and production arm and 100 percent subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), has announced a significant oil discovery in Onshore Block 1, Abu Dhabi on January 13, 2026, strengthening India’s overseas energy portfolio and long-term energy security.
The discovery has been made through BPRL’s 50:50 special purpose vehicle Urja Bharat Pte Limited (UBPL), following the successful completion of the exploration phase for which the company invested nearly USD 166 million since the award of the concession in March 2019.
Major Discoveries in Two Key Wells
The concession, covering an extensive area of 6,162 square kilometres, grants UBPL 100 percent rights over the block.
The first oil discovery was achieved in the XN-76 well within the Unconventional Shilaif play, where oil flowed to the surface after successful hydro-fracturing operations, confirming the presence of commercially promising unconventional oil resources.
In another breakthrough, oil was also discovered during testing of exploration well XN-79 02S, marking the first-ever oil find in the Habshan reservoir within the concession area.
Positive Outlook and Appraisal Phase Ahead
BPRL has expressed strong confidence in the results and will now focus on the appraisal phase to further establish the economic viability and deliverability of the discovered wells. The twin discoveries significantly enhance the asset value of the block and open up fresh opportunities for future production growth.
🇮🇳 Strategic Boost for India’s Energy Security
These new overseas oil discoveries represent a major strategic achievement for BPRL as an international operator and will play a crucial role in supplementing India’s energy security by diversifying supply sources and strengthening upstream capabilities abroad.
The development was officially disclosed by BPCL under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015 to both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange on January 14, 2026.
