New Delhi: BPCL's Mumbai Refinery celebrated 40 years of its Aromatics Recovery Unit (ARU), commissioned in 1985. The unit has played a vital role in extracting valuable aromatic compounds like benzene, toluene and xylene from crude oil during the refining process, thereby preventing their release into the atmosphere and reducing environmental pollution.

Over the years, the unit was upgraded with advanced features like a top-divided wall column, enabling the production of high-purity pharma-grade hexane. These enhancements supported BPCL’s gradual entry into the petrochemicals space.
