CIL, BHEL to collaborate for coal gasification plant project
The Indian government-owned coal mining and refining corporation Coal India Limited with Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) will together work on the gasification projects by 2030.

New Delhi: Ministry of coal is targeting to have 100 million tonnes of coal gasification by 2030 in line with green initiatives in the coal sector. In view of this coal, the ministry proposed the four coal gasification in the Union Budget for 2022-2023 to help in framing up the technical and financial viability of coal gasification.
The Indian government-owned coal mining and refining corporation Coal India Limited with Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) will together work on the gasification projects by 2030.
According to the statement released by the coal ministry states, “Coal Ministry aims to have 100 MT coal gasification by 2030 through sustainable utilisation. For this, CIL has taken up four projects, which were announced in the Union Budget for 2022-23 to help firm up the technical and financial viability of these projects. Experts said that for coal gasification and carbon capture, India should bank on indigenous technology to make it reliable and affordable.”
Sustainable coal utilization
The coal ministry is creating a new path of sustainable coal utilization for the development, a better investment in planting these projects will lead towards the Energy for Sustainable Growth. The largest coal-producing company in the world contributes around 82% to the total coal production in India.
Implementation of plant
Additional Secretary (Coal) in a webinar on Energy for Sustainable Growth states, coal gasification target of 100 MT of domestic coal by the year 2030 will be achieved creating a new path of sustainable coal utilization. R&D of Thermax plant & BHEL plant were shared.
The project of the gasification plant will be divided into phases and planned accordingly. In the first phase, the project will be based on low ash coal available in CIL will be taken up. Moreover, the CIL will keep eye on the mining of coal and marketing. The gasification and product conversion plant will be set up on BOO/BOM/LSTK contract basis.
