New Delhi, 22nd May 2025: GRSE attended the Commercial Negotiation Committee (CNC) meeting convened by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for opening of commercial bids for the acquisition of eight (08) Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) on 21 May 2025 in New Delhi.

During the meeting, the Commercial bids were opened, and it was noted that GRSE became the Lowest bidder (L1) for the Construction of Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) for the Indian Navy. The L1 bidder will be awarded five (05) NGC ships at a likely value of more than Rs 25,000 crores.

The Defence PSU GRSE states, the overall size of the order is likely to be Rs 40,000 crore, which will be split between two shipyard companies. The shipyard, which emerges as the lowest bidder, was likely to receive Rs 25,000 crore worth of orders, which means the GRSE will hold up the project of Rs. 25,000 and will be awarded 5 NGC Ships.

What is NGC Projects?

The Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) projects aims to build a new class of advanced, stealth anti-surface warfare corvettes for the Indian Navy. Recently, one of India's leading defence shipyards, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) declared the lowest bidder for the construction of five of these ships.

What are the Features of Corvettes?

These corvettes are planned to have advanced stealth capabilities, including a low radar cross-section, and reduced infrared, acoustic, and magnetic signatures. The new corvettes will be versatile platforms for various tasks, including surveillance, escort, deterrence, surface action group operations, search and attack, and littoral defence. They will be equipped with advanced sensors and weapon systems.
