Project Overview: 14 Fast Patrol Vessels

The Indian Coast Guard had placed an order for 14 Fast Patrol Vessels with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. These vessels are designed for coastal surveillance, search and rescue operations, and anti-smuggling duties.

Fast Patrol Vessels are small but agile ships. They help the Coast Guard patrol India's vast coastline effectively. Each vessel is built with advanced navigation and communication systems.

Why This Matters for Indigenous Shipbuilding

India has been focusing on self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The government's 'Make in India' initiative promotes domestic production of military equipment.

This project aligns with that vision. MDL is constructing all 14 FPVs entirely in India. The company uses indigenous technology and materials wherever possible.

The keel laying of the 4th vessel and production start of the 7th vessel show steady progress. It demonstrates MDL's growing capability to handle large-scale shipbuilding projects simultaneously.

Strengthening Indian Coast Guard Capabilities

The Indian Coast Guard protects India's maritime interests. It handles tasks like:

  • Coastal security

  • Fisherman assistance during emergencies

  • Environmental protection (oil spill response)

  • Anti-poaching operations

Adding 14 new Fast Patrol Vessels will significantly boost the Coast Guard's fleet strength. These modern ships will replace older vessels and expand operational reach.
