Mahatma Gandhi also valued Cleanliness above Independence, he recollected.

He expressed pride that NLCIL had been consistent in its efforts towards “Swachh India” which was reflected in the company winning the first prize among Coal PSUs for its Swachhata Campaign in the last two years. He expressed pride that NLCIL’s creative initiatives in sustainability fetched it the opportunity to install the "Jai Hind Chakra" - a scrap metal sculpture – under the concept of “Waste to Art” near the new Parliament House in New Delhi. He motivated the participants by appreciating their zeal in participating in the “Swachhotsav”, a veritable festival of cleanliness, which was the reason NLCIL was at the forefront of the campaign.
