New Delhi, December 20, 2025 – Indian Railways has approved 38 major railway projects in Maharashtra, covering new lines, gauge conversion, and doubling works over a total length of 5,098 km at a cost of ₹89,780 crore. The projects aim to enhance passenger capacity, operational efficiency, and regional connectivity.

In addition, 98 surveys covering 8,603 km have been sanctioned between 2022-23 and 2025-26 for potential future projects.

Budget and Track Commissioning Growth

Investment in Maharashtra railway infrastructure has grown sharply over the years. The annual budget allocation has increased from ₹1,171 crore during 2009–14 to ₹23,778 crore in 2025-26 – a 20-fold rise.

Track commissioning has also accelerated significantly:

  • 2009–14: 292 km (58 km/year)

  • 2014–25: 2,292 km (208 km/year)

Mumbai Suburban Rail Upgrades

Mumbai’s suburban rail network handles around 3,200 trains daily in addition to 120 originating Mail and Express trains. To improve capacity and safety, several key works have been completed or planned:

  • Bandra Terminus: 3 pit lines

  • Mumbai Central: Platform extended for 24 LHB coaches

  • Jogeshwari: 2 additional platforms

  • Dadar: 1 additional platform

  • Vasai Road: 6 platforms, 3 pit lines, 5 stabling lines

  • Panvel-Kalamboli: 5 platforms, 4 pit lines, 2 sick lines

  • Virar & Mira Road: 25 stabling lines each

Additionally, platform extension works at 34 stations are underway to accommodate 15-car EMU trains.

Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)

The MUTP has been a key focus for suburban rail capacity augmentation:

  • MUTP-II: ₹8,087 crore

  • MUTP-III: ₹10,947 crore

  • MUTP-IIIA: ₹33,690 crore

Projects include corridor expansions, new lines, and elevated links in Mumbai, Kalyan, Panvel, Borivali, and Virar. To further increase passenger capacity, 238 new 12-car rakes have been sanctioned at a cost of ₹19,293 crore, with procurement in progress.

Major Completed and Ongoing Projects

Some recently completed projects include:

  • Pune–Miraj–Londa doubling

  • Manmad–Jalgaon 3rd line

  • Udhna–Jalgaon doubling

  • Chhindwara–Nagpur gauge conversion

Ongoing major projects include:

  • Indore–Manmad new line

  • Wardha–Bhusawal 3rd & 4th line

  • Itarsi–Nagpur 3rd line

  • Gondia–Ballarshah doubling

High-Speed Rail and Freight Corridor

  • Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 100% land acquisition completed; construction underway

  • Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC): 76 km commissioned in Maharashtra, remaining works in progress, enhancing freight movement from JNPT to Delhi NCR

Planning and Execution

Railway projects are sanctioned zone-wise and depend on factors such as traffic projections, connectivity, socio-economic benefits, and available funding. Execution timelines are influenced by land acquisition, forest and statutory clearances, terrain, law and order conditions, and available working months.
