NTPC Invites Applications for Chairman & Managing Director Post — Vacancy from August 2026
New Delhi, 28 February 2026: The Ministry of Power, Government of India, has issued an official notification inviting applications for the post of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) at NTPC Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE). The vacancy will occur on 1 August 2026.
Company Overview
NTPC Limited, incorporated in 1975, is India’s largest power generator and a key player in the refining, power, and energy infrastructure sectors. Headquartered in New Delhi, NTPC has over 16,600 employees and a Government of India equity of 51.10% as of 31 March 2025. NTPC was granted Maharatna status in 2010, providing enhanced autonomy in decision-making.
Role & Responsibilities
The CMD of NTPC is the Chief Executive responsible for:

Overall management and performance of NTPC and its subsidiaries/joint ventures

Strategic direction, corporate governance, and operational oversight

Driving sustainable growth and expansion across the power value chain, including generation, renewables, energy storage, nuclear, mining, and green chemicals
The CMD reports to the Board of Directors and the Government of India.
Eligibility Criteria

Age: Minimum 45 years; must have 2–3 years residual service at the time of vacancy depending on category. Maximum age 60 years (superannuation).

CPSE/ Central Government Group A Officers/ Armed Forces/ All India Services

State Public Sector Enterprises with annual turnover ≥ ₹10,000 crore

Private sector companies with annual turnover ≥ ₹10,000 crore (preference to listed companies)

Qualifications: Engineering graduate, Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant, or Postgraduate/MBA from a recognized institute

Experience: Minimum 5 years cumulative experience in last 10 years in Finance, Business Development, Production, Operations, Marketing, or Project Management. Power/Energy sector experience is preferred.

Pay Scale: ₹2,00,000 – 3,70,000 (IDA) for CPSE candidates; equivalent board-level pay for private/state sector candidates
Duration of Appointment
The appointment will be for five years from joining or until superannuation, whichever is earlier.

Selection Process
