New Delhi: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, to collaborate on advanced research in red mud processing and enable the recovery of rare earth elements from this industrial by-product.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NALCO, and Shri Jagdish Arora, Director (P&T), along with senior officials from both organizations.
This strategic partnership aims to develop sustainable technologies for the utilization of red mud—an alumina refinery residue—transforming waste into valuable resources. The initiative aligns with NALCO’s long-term vision of innovation-driven growth, environmental stewardship, and the adoption of circular economy practices in mining and metal production.
By enabling the extraction of critical rare earth elements, the collaboration supports India’s strategic resource security while significantly reducing the environmental footprint of industrial waste.
The agreement reinforces NALCO’s commitment to responsible mining, research-led development, and strengthening industry–research partnerships for sustainable industrial transformation.
