India Becomes Global Leader in Digital Payments; UPI Accounts for 81% of Retail Transactions
New Delhi: India’s retail digital payments ecosystem has witnessed exponential growth, driven by coordinated initiatives from the Government, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and National Payments Corporation of India. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as the world’s largest real-time retail payment system, accounting for 81% of total retail digital payments in FY 2024-25.

The surge in digital payments is fueled by smartphone penetration, Aadhaar-enabled authentication, e-KYC, financial inclusion, and merchant acceptance infrastructure across urban and rural India.
Key Initiatives Driving Adoption

Payment Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF): 5.8 crore digital touchpoints and 56.86 crore QR codes deployed.

UPI 123PAY & Hello UPI: Enable payments through IVR, sound-based proximity, and conversational interfaces for feature-phone users.

Financial Literacy Programs: 2,421 Centres for Financial Literacy (CFL) and annual Financial Literacy Week enhance safe and informed digital payment adoption.
Safety and Fraud Prevention
To mitigate digital payment frauds:

Device binding, two-factor authentication, and daily transaction limits are enforced.

NPCI provides AI/ML-based fraud monitoring to alert banks of suspicious transactions.

Citizens can report incidents via the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, helpline “1930”, and DoT’s Digital Intelligence Platform (“Chakshu”).
