NTPC launches green hydrogen buses in Leh, aims to reduce carbon emission
NTPC unveiled the Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, introducing hydrogen-fueled buses as a step toward reducing carbon emissions. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the project, which includes a hydrogen fueling station, a solar power plant, and five fuel-cell buses operating at an altitude of 11,562 feet.
The buses, designed for tough conditions, can run 300 km on a single hydrogen refill and handle sub-zero temperatures and low-density air. The hydrogen station, with a capacity of 80 kg per day, uses energy from a 1.7 MW solar plant.
The aim is to cut carbon emissions by 350 metric tons annually while producing enough oxygen to match the impact of planting around 13,000 trees.

He stressed the importance of such projects in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting renewable energy, especially in remote regions like Ladakh. The area’s high solar potential and cold climate make it ideal for generating and using green hydrogen.
This project is part of NTPC’s larger push to expand its renewable energy portfolio. The company aims to achieve 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and is exploring green hydrogen technologies across India, including plans for a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
With this development, NTPC seeks to tackle logistical and environmental challenges in remote areas. The Leh project shows how renewable energy and hydrogen can work together to create sustainable energy solutions for the future.
