New Delhi: With the official statement served as strike notice by some of the trade unions affiliated to HMS, AITUC, CITU, INTUC that are currently operating in coal industry, proposing one-day strike on 12th February, 2026, the Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Ltd has requested the employees and supporters of the striking unions to rethink against the decision and exempt the coal industry from this planned one-day strike which might could adversely impact the industry to loss.

The proposed one-day strike is against “Notification of 04 Labour Codes” and other demands of workers, people, etc. The said strike notices have been referred to the Chief Labour Commissioner, New Delhi, Ministry of Coal and other authorities as per the provisions of The Industrial Relations Code, 2020 and Rules there under.

The CMD Coal India Ltd has stated that Coal India and its subsidiaries have been playing critical roles in energizing India’s power sector and produces around 80% of the country’s total coal with productions recovering still after Monsoon-related disruptions and meanwhile maintain uninterrupted operations is essential to meet the FY 2025-26 production target along with satisfying energy needs.

So, therefore any kind of work stoppages during this recovery can cause threatening affects to hamper the productivity of subsidiaries and impacting the national coal supply. The coal producing PSU is significantly contributing towards Self-reliant India by reducing coal import dependence. A strike could impact the country’s steady energy supply of coal industry and in addition it could also adversely impact other major industries like steel, cement and fertilizers where coal is majorly provided by Coal India Ltd.

The most significant and crucial reason cited to avoid this strike is that, since the matter is seized under conciliation with labour enforcement authorities and would act as illegal strike and will No Work-No Pay and other penal actions.
