Coal India Limited (CIL), the world’s largest coal producer and one of India’s most influential Maharatna PSUs, continues to drive the nation’s energy security with unmatched scale, strategic significance, and sustainable growth. Established in 1975 with just 79 million tonnes of production, CIL today operates 310 mines across eight states, employs over 2.20 lakh people, and supplies nearly 80% of India’s domestic coal requirements. Its contribution powers 55% of India’s total electricity generation, making it a critical pillar of the national energy ecosystem.

In FY 2024–25, CIL achieved record-breaking performance with 781 MT of coal production, 763.06 MT of offtake, and the highest-ever overburden removal of 2019.495 MCum. Subsidiaries like BCCL, CCL, NCL, WCL, and MCL exceeded their annual targets for the second consecutive year, with Mahanadi Coalfields Limited becoming India’s first subsidiary to cross the 200 MT mark. CIL currently has 117 coal projects worth ₹1.40 lakh crore under implementation and 13 new mining projects approved this year, ensuring robust future growth.

As a strategic enterprise, CIL plays a decisive role in India’s self-reliance goals—supporting the Make in India mission, reducing coal imports, and ensuring stable power for industries and households. The company is modernising rapidly through First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects worth ₹27,750 crore, which will mechanize evacuation and enhance coal quality. CIL’s integrated ERP system now provides real-time visibility across production, inventory, equipment, workforce, and project performance.

Beyond mining, CIL is deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The company planted 40.38 lakh saplings over 1,712 hectares in 2024–25, developed 32 eco-parks on reclaimed land, and provided mine-water benefits to 11.79 lakh people in 880 villages. With 197 MW of installed solar capacity and 120.72 million units of solar energy generation, CIL significantly reduced carbon emissions and is targeting 3 GW renewable energy capacity by 2027–28 and 9.5 GW by 2029–30.

CIL’s leadership in CSR is equally remarkable—the company spent ₹735 crore in FY 2024–25 on education, healthcare, water supply, livelihoods, women empowerment, and sports. It follows a socially responsible model of “Mining with a Human Face,” prioritizing rehabilitation, livelihood restoration, and community welfare. Quality management also remains a top priority, with the GCV variance maintained within one band through stringent third-party sampling.

Coal India’s long-term strategy includes diversification into chemicals, fertilizers, underground coal gasification, solar energy, wind power, pumped storage projects, and critical minerals—building a more resilient, future-ready portfolio. With a bold goal to achieve 1 billion tonnes of coal production by 2028–29, supported by clearances, land acquisition, and infrastructure readiness, CIL is shaping India’s energy roadmap for the next decade.

As India grows into a global economic powerhouse, Coal India Limited stands at the centre of the nation’s energy, industrial, and sustainable development journey—evolving from a coal mining giant into a multi-energy Maharatna enterprise of global scale.
