LIC Turns 70: Holds 65% Market Share & ₹57 Lakh Crore AUM

New Delhi: Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is celebrating its 70th anniversary on 1 September 2026.

The country’s largest life insurer was established on 1 September 1956 with the aim of spreading life insurance widely and offering financial protection at a reasonable cost. Over seven decades, LIC has built its journey on trust, service and financial strength.

Key highlights shared by LIC

  • Market share in FY 2025-26: 65.16% in number of policies and 56.66% in First Year Premium Income

  • Total Assets Under Management (AUM): ₹57.29 lakh crore (up 5.08%)

  • Continues to remain India’s largest life insurer even after the sector was opened to private players

LIC offers a wide range of life insurance, pension and market-linked products. A major milestone was its IPO in May 2022, after which the Corporation listed on both NSE and BSE. Since then, it has focused on stronger corporate governance, transparency, digital transformation and customer service.

Community and digital initiatives

LIC’s Golden Jubilee Foundation, set up in 2006, has so far disbursed ₹303 crore across 1,045 projects. It has also provided 41,776 scholarships worth ₹105.27 crore to needy students.

On the digital front, the My LIC App and other platforms have improved convenience and accessibility for customers.

As LIC marks 70 years, it has expressed gratitude to policyholders, shareholders, employees, agents and other stakeholders. Guided by its ethos “Yogakshemam Vahamyaham – Your welfare is our responsibility,” the Corporation remains committed to protecting lives and strengthening financial security.
