PESB Invites Applications for Director (Projects) at GAIL India
New Delhi, March 3, 2026: The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has issued an advertisement inviting applications for the post of Director (Projects) at GAIL (India) Limited, a premier Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. The vacancy notification was released on March 3, 2026, and interested candidates can apply online until March 24, 2026.
About GAIL India
GAIL (India) Limited was incorporated in August 1984 as a Central Public Sector Undertaking with the mission of accelerating and optimizing the effective and economic use of natural gas and its fractions for the benefit of the national economy. The company was conferred Navratna status in 1997 and is now one of the fourteen Maharatna PSUs in the country, the highest status awarded to any public sector undertaking.
As on March 31, 2025, GAIL employed 5,010 regular employees, comprising 4,199 executives and 811 non-executives. The authorized capital of the company stands at ₹10,000 crore, while the paid-up capital is ₹6,575.10 crore. The Government of India holds 51.52% stake in the company. Its registered and corporate offices are located in New Delhi.
GAIL's primary business includes transmission and marketing of natural gas, extraction and transmission of LPG, manufacturing and marketing of petrochemicals, and exploration and production activities.
Role and Responsibilities
The Director (Projects) is a full-time functional Director and a member of the Board of Directors of GAIL. The position reports directly to the Chairman and Managing Director of the company.
The role carries overall responsibility for Projects Planning and Execution as well as Operations and Maintenance of all GAIL installations spread across the country. Additionally, the Director (Projects) oversees key support functions including Contracting and Procurement, Telecommunications and Telemetry, and Business Information System (BIS).
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
The applicant must be an Engineering Graduate with a good academic record from a recognized university or institute.
Experience Requirement
The candidate should have at least five years of cumulative experience or exposure during the last ten years in Project Management or Operations and Maintenance in a large organization of repute. Experience in the Hydrocarbon sector will be given preference.
Age Requirement
The minimum age for applicants is 45 years. For internal candidates from GAIL or other CPSEs, at least two years of residual service as on the date of vacancy is required. For candidates from other sectors including Central Government, State PSEs, and private sector, three years of residual service is required.
Pay Scale and Superannuation
The post carries an IDA pay scale of ₹180,000 to ₹340,000. The age of superannuation is 60 years.
Eligibility Across Sectors
Central Public Sector Enterprises
For candidates from CPSEs, the minimum length of service required in the eligible scale is one year for internal candidates and two years for others, as on the date of vacancy.
Central Government
Group 'A' officers of the Central Government, including those from All India Services and Autonomous Bodies, should be holding a post of the level of Joint Secretary in Government of India or an equivalent post carrying equivalent scale of pay on substantive basis. Officers drawing higher pay merely on account of Non-Functional Upgradation or Next Below Rule basis without holding a substantive post are not eligible. Central Government officers will be considered only on immediate absorption basis.
Public Sector Banks and Financial Institutions
Applicants from Public Sector Banks and Financial Institutions should be holding a Board level position or at least a post immediately below the Board level for at least one year on the date of application.
Armed Forces
Officers from the Armed Forces of the Union should be holding a post of the level of Major General in the Army or equivalent rank in the Navy or Air Force on the date of application.
State Public Sector Enterprises
Candidates from State PSEs must come from enterprises with annual turnover of ₹10,000 crore or more. They should be working at Board level position or at least a post immediately below the Board level on the date of application.
Private Sector, Joint Ventures, and Federations
Applicants from private sector companies, joint ventures, and federations must come from entities with annual turnover of ₹10,000 crore or more. Preference will be given to candidates from listed companies. They should be working at Board level position or at least a post immediately below the Board level on the date of application.
Duration of Appointment
The appointment shall be for a period of five years from the date of joining or until the date of superannuation or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Application Process
Mode of Application
Interested candidates can apply only through the online mode available on the PESB website at https://pesb.gov.in/. The application format is available against this specific Job Description.
Submission Through Proper Channel
Applications must be routed through the appropriate channel depending on the candidate's background:
Central Government officers, including those from Armed Forces, All India Services, Public Sector Banks, Financial Institutions, and Autonomous Bodies, must send their applications through their Cadre Controlling Authority or Administrative Ministry.
CMDs, MDs, and Functional Directors in CPSEs must route their applications through the concerned Administrative Ministry. Below Board level officials in CPSEs should send their applications through their respective CPSEs.
For State PSEs, CMDs, MDs, and Functional Directors must route their applications through the concerned Administrative Secretary and Cadre Controlling Authority of the State Government. Below Board level officials should go through their SPSE.
Candidates from Private Companies can apply directly to PESB. Applicants from Joint Ventures and Federations must apply online and forward the printed application along with supporting documents.
Documents Required for Private Sector Applicants
Private sector applicants and those from JVs and Federations must submit annual reports of the three financial years preceding the calendar year in which the post is advertised for the organization where they are currently working. They must also provide documentary proof if the company is listed, along with evidence of working at Board level or at a post immediately below the Board level. Self-attested copies of documents supporting age and qualifications, as well as details of relevant jobs handled in the past, are also required.
Vigilance Clearance
The cadre controlling authority or competent authority is required to forward applications of only those applicants who are clear from vigilance angle. The vigilance profile in the 13-point proforma prescribed by the Central Vigilance Commission must invariably be attached with the application form.
Mandatory Undertaking
All applicants must give an undertaking that they will join the post if selected. If an applicant does not give such undertaking, the application will be rejected.
If a candidate conveys unwillingness to join after the interview is held, they will be debarred for a period of two years from the date of interview for being considered for any Board level post in any CPSE. Similarly, if a candidate conveys unwillingness after the issue of offer of appointment, they will be debarred for two years from the date of offer.
For CPSE candidates, the debarment applies to Board level posts in any CPSE other than the one to which the candidate belongs.
Important Dates
The last date for submission of online application by the applicant is March 24, 2026, by 03:00 PM.
Nodal officers, Heads of Organisations, Competent Authorities, Administrative Secretaries, and Cadre Controlling Authorities must forward applications to PESB by April 2, 2026, by 05:00 PM.
No applications will be entertained under any circumstances after the stipulated dates. Incomplete applications and applications received after the stipulated date will be rejected outright.
Shortlisting and Selection
The Board reserves the right to shortlist applicants for interview, keeping in view the extant guidelines issued from time to time. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for the selection process.
